Not only is Wanderer conflicted about her own feelings, but she has Melanie's consciousness battling her every step of the way. Wanderer can still hear Melanie, giving "internal conflict" a whole new meaning.Jared is attracted to Melanie, but not to Wanderer, whom he sees as an invader. Ian is attracted to Wanderer, but it's not even her body. The relationships Wanderer forms with other humans-real humans-are skewed by the fact that Wanderer looks like Melanie, but isn't Melanie.By making the narrator one of the aliens, Stephenie Meyer has turned this convention on its head and made us sympathize with the alien. The human race is all but extinct, hiding in caves in the desert, fearful of alien takeover. But in this story, they're only kind of the bad guys. Watching her navigate complicated paths of human emotion is fascinating. Because of this, we get a childlike view of the world through someone with an adult brain. She has more knowledge than we humans know what to do with. She's lived eight lives on eight different planets. Her no-body nature complicates things for a few reasons. Um, ew? Wanderer controls Melanie's body kind of like Krang from TMNT or Plankton on SpongeBob Squarepants. And she's been implanted into Melanie Stryder's spinal cord and brain stem. She's an alien, a parasite for a lack of a better term, living inside a human host's body. But you wouldn't actually be looking at her. And you'd probably like what you saw, because she's athletic and attractive. If you were to take a look at our protagonist, you'd see a young woman.
